Learn From This Advocate of Women and Children

Michelle’s Example

At Wando International we are SO GRATEFUL for those who have supported us on our mission to serve and empower the most vulnerable, Widows and Orphans.

We have had many come alongside us since we started this work back in 2013, helping us make an even bigger impact in the lives of those experiencing extreme poverty in Uganda.

One of these wonderful individuals especially stands out to us, which is why we wanted to share her story with you!

Her name is Michelle.

Michelle has been involved with our organization since 2014, after being introduced to us by one of the leaders at La Quinta Christian Fellowship.

After learning about our projects helping women and children, she became an instant advocate.

Advocate For Women

Michelle had no hesitations about getting involved.

She really connected with our Bead Project first, because it empowered women with a skill that they could use to provide for their families.

She started raising awareness for Women Business Owners partnered with us by hosting Bead Parties locally at her church and in her community.

Her sincerest passion was sharing with others about how these hard-working mothers and grandmothers were true artisans, hand-rolling each bead made from recycled paper and turning them into beautiful pieces of jewelry.

Advocate For Children

Michelle also got involved in our Child Advocacy Program as soon as she learned just how vulnerable the children attending our school were.

Being centrally located in the slums of Njeru, the children attending our Primary School come from broken homes and families who can’t even afford basic necessities like food and medicine, let alone an education.

Michelle started advocating for Yusufand sponsored him at school so that he could get an education, something ALL CHILDREN DESERVE.

She’s been writing letters consistently to Yusuf AND working his case manager for four years now!

She sends regular words of encouragement, follows up with how he’s doing with his studies, and checks in to see how his family is doing.

Most of all if there is ever a need that comes up with Yusuf, Michelle is there to help.

Advocate For The Vulnerable

It wasn’t long before Michelle FELL IN LOVE with another child, Derrick.

Derrick was rescued from an extremely dangerous situation three years ago, when we discovered him at five years old so malnourished and underdeveloped that he couldn’t even stand or walk.

He was brought under the care of our Babies’ Home where he’s been loved back to health and has now grown into a happy, healthy boy.

Michelle has watched this TRANSFORMATION first-hand!

Just like with Yusuf, she became Derrick’s child advocate.

Committed to fostering a relationship with him and helping with his needs at the orphanage.

Love in Action

The real BLESSING of Michelle’s relationships developed through advocacy came when she finally traveled to Uganda to meet these women and children.

Staying in contact through letters and updates over the years not only gave Michelle a purpose for her trip, but it made meeting Derrick, Yusuf, and the Women Bead partners SO MUCH MORE SPECIAL.

Cheers to you Michelle!  We thank you for your heart AND commitment to advocacy of those who need it.

About the Author:

For over 10 years Elizabeth has dedicated herself to serving others getting involved with outreach in her local community as well as international volunteer work in Haiti. In 2014 she learned of Michelle Huo’s work with Wando International to empower vulnerable women and children to shift the course of their lives. After taking her first trip to visit Wando’s projects in Uganda Elizabeth joined Michelle in 2015 to help her achieve her vision. Now Elizabeth is working to help students in third world countries like Uganda learn the skills that businesses and Non-Profits around the world want and need. By strategically partnering these students with SMB and Non-Profit organizations, they become empowered to lift themselves out of poverty while organizations benefit from increased revenue generation.
